The last few times I've entered (BOS, ATL, CLT) I didn't even need to get my passport out of my pocket. Smile at the camera and then walk over to the agent who waves you through. The last one even noted that me and my wife had hit the kiosks and we were both OK to go (she wasn't even at the booth yet, she was busy fussing with getting her passport out).
