There are plenty of sites like the points guy that compare the cards side by side.
But I'm interested in material differences in practice. I use the card mainly for traveling and consumer protection.
For Traveling. It seems the benefits are very similar but there are operational differences. For example I was at Denver airport and noted that the Priority Plus restaurants did NOT accept Capital One Venture X but did accept chase. Anything else I should be aware of?
For consumer protection. I've have been pleasantly surprised by Chase's consumer protection. They replaced a faulty $5K oven, a stolen $1K ring and the travel insurance was great. Are the Capital One Venture x protections in practice similar and most importantly do you get the run-around (never had this with Chase) when you file claims.
Any differences in actual operations appreciated!
Amex/Cap1 have both stopped participating in Priority Pass restaurants. So Chase is the only option between the three that still includes that.
I have both the CSR and VentureX. Honestly, I continue to use CSR for all travel expenses, mostly because of the protections which I’ve always found to be pretty good, as well as the bonus points on travel (and restaurants). The couple of times I’ve used the travel protections, CSR has been pretty good, only issue is asking for documents I already provided. Travel credit is super easy to get with Chase, and very broad, and credits instantly when charge is posted. My first year with VentureX, the credit posted quickly (within 3 days of purchase). This year, the credit took almost a month to post, and got pushback after I asked about 7 business days after charge, with them insisting that they couldn’t do anything unless it’s been more than 2 billing cycles. Credit through Cap1 also available just for portal purchases, which isn’t a problem for me, per say, but much less broad then Chase, plus I prefer to book directly instead of via a portal in most cases.
I do use the Cap1 card for most everyday purchases, since 2x miles is better.
as for travel protections, just reading the terms also makes me a bit skeptical of Cap1 protections. There is nothing I can see in the terms, for example, about accommodations (ie, hotel), and so not entirely covinved about coverage for those kind of expenses of necessary. I have not got answers from Cap1, or also previously when asked in this forum. So maybe it is fine, but I don’t see anything to convince me that it is covered. I’m happy to be convinced based on reports, but have not seen any.
Hope that helps a bit.
