FWIW, after 20 years of no AmEx 2FA I too now have to do it due to recent fraud on one of my biz gold card accounts mandating card cancellation and reissue (with new account number).
I think you find it to be a pain because it IS a pain 
. FWIW (again) my AmEx mobile app still works based only on Face ID.
