I agree with escapefromphl. The hotel could easily not allow anyone to check-in except the person on the reservation. Yes, hotels in the US tend to be a bit lax with that, but i wouldn't rely on that for hotels outside the US. If you want the least risky option, make the reservation in their name. I know they won't get any elite benefits, but that is better than the possible alternative.
You could contact the hotel directly to see if they would be willing to accommodate you. If you go that route, make sure to get that acceptance in writing, just in case there are problems when they check-in they can show the GM or other manager's email stating they OK'd this.
