This is similar to my experience this year on intra-Europe LH/OS Y connecting from UA. Was never offered a choice of seats during UA check-in. Thankfully I was auto assigned non-middle seats (occasionally exit rows), but couldn't find a way to change them afterwards on either UA or LH app.
