When I look through their page about award ticket rules, it only mentions waitlisting for alternate flights in I/IN. Now I'm wondering if waitlisting for X/XN was ever actually officially allowed? For instance, you are confirmed for the 9:00 a.m. from ORD to DEN; connecting onto the 4:00 p.m. from DEN to LAX. But there is an earlier flight from DEN-LAX that leaves at 12:00 p.m. I've had agents waitlist me for the earlier flight. I've even been able to waitlist for both legs (in this example, there was an earlier flight from ORD-DEN that departed at 8:00 a.m., so they waitlist me for the 8:00 a.m. ORD-DEN and 12:00 p.m. DEN-LAX). Does anyone else have experiences with this?
I believe it was never "officially allowed", but it was a commonly granted request.
Waitlists are as simple as an agent typing in new segments to your PNR in status WL. Any segments can be added waitlisted for any class - the only limiting factor is the human between you and the keyboard, and the understanding of UA policy.
