I'm assuming there wouldn't be space on LY, especially if same day cancellation, as they have been very full with reserve soldiers flying home over the past couple of days. Obviously if they did provide a suitable alternative it would then be on me and I wouldnt expect anything further from BA.

I think it is possible some may have viewed your post as suggesting an extended stay in London at BA's expense, rather than maybe the usual duty of care situation of 1/2 nights extra stay due to the difficulties of finding availability despite you wanting to return at the earliest convenience.

In any case, if your travel insurance linked to a UK card doesn't cover a situation like this, then at the very least this has served to highlight that you need to review your cover.
