Competition isn't stiff, since these loyalty programs have degenerated into a shadow of their former selves. I have not redeemed with Aeroplan in 3 years as there is nothing available to my destinations in a premium class. The value for my potential transaction is no longer there either. Yes, I know AP works for many members. However, I never used the point crawler option, no Cowtool for me, no Expert Flyer, I just wanted and expected the AP website to present me with viable options. It used to a few years ago. it was slow and clunky but there were options. Now all I can find are flights on bottom tier airlines on routes that I wish to avoid. It is why I am considering moving my loyalty program earnings to SQ. I have already switched to the basic CIBC Aeroplan card. I get a thrill making purchases knowing that I didn't have to pay a fee for the card to amass a few extra points that I can't use. I have 600,000+. My Delta experience is no better where I have 100,000+ next to useless points.
