I remember when AA tried the simple fares concept. Shortly thereafer, Northwest launced an incredible summer fare sale and everybody had to match. That drove the overall yields down so AA had to revert to the "old way" to squeeze yields where it could.

Travelling that summer was miserable because the planes were so full!
