I own a Tesla Model 3 (the simple Tesla supercharger network), and a Porsche Taycan (the frustrating Electrify America network). We just drove from Palm Springs to Las Vegas and back and I decided to take the Taycan to see how the EA network worked. If you decide on a non-Tesla, pack your patience. I would recommend if this is your first EV rental, go with the Tesla. The in-car map shows the charging stations, you just plug in the car and don't worry about it. EA, on the other hand, doesn't have as many locations, or stalls at each location, and often they don't work.

We charged three times at EA this weekend. The first one was fine (Baker, CA). There was only 1 stall out of 12 unavailable. The second stop was Las Vegas. Six chargers, one car was blocking one of the stalls (an EV but wasn't charging). We waited about 30 minutes for an open stall and there were two people in front of us. The guy who pulled in next to us had a Kia Niro rental...he didn't know how to charge it. He said he reserved a regular car and was just given this with no instruction (no good). Our third stop was in Barstow, CA. The first charger we used was charging super slow (60 kwh). The vehicle next to us was charging 35 kwh, which was even worse, so we moved to another charger for normal speeds.

I've had my Tesla for three years now, and drive it between Portland and Palm Springs. I have NEVER had a problem at a Tesla supercharger, nor had to wait for one.

Just my .02.
