Ekoin Buddhist Temple, Mt Koya, the "100 sq mt room"
Ekoin is a genuine Buddhist temple that makes its revenue by effectively running a hotel as part of its facility. Unlike other temple lodgings, it has one luxurious room where we stayed to (somewhat) experience temple life. I say 'somewhat' because this sort of thing doesn't really go with Buddhism. Although the room and most of the service is at, or is close to, luxury levels, it still isn't a luxury hotel. There are several reasons for this. One is that meals are served (in the room) at fixed times. Checkout iw 10am. Dinner is at 5:30pm (!) and breakfast is at 8am. Another is that all food is not just vegetarian, but strictly vegan. The vegan dinner is beautifully presented all at once as a lot of dishes. There is a candle burner for the one hot dish and there is hot soup, the rest (except for tea or coffee) are cold. I forgot to take photos of dinner, but here are some of the room; apologies in advance because I am not a photographer at KI-NRT's level.
Living room with "mini bar" and garden view to the right.
Another view of the main room from the other side. Garden to the left, to the right is a large tatami room where meals are served.
Private garden as seen from the main room
A portion of the tatami mat room
The bedroom with, yes!, two actual double beds. On the wall opposite the beds is another monster TV set.
Small toilet room, near the entrance to the suite; i.e., about as far from the bedroom as it is possible to get. LOL
The main bathroom has a single sink. Adjacent to it is a shower room with a bath. It is not a mineral bath (onsen), just regular water.
Internet is included and is excellent. There is free parking on premises. There are three different ceremonies that visitors are encouraged to attend: meditation in the afternoon, a regular service and a fire ceremony, both before breakfast. Amenities are in little bottles from a brand I've not heard of called Thann. Seems to be of decent quality. Lots of the monks who you interact with speak decent English.
If you want to experience a Buddhist temple in as close to non-Buddhist luxury as possible, I'd say this is the way. The room price for two, including breakfast and dinner, was JPY168,000.
