I faced same dilemma when booking for daughter and SIL. Flying RT LAX / DCA. No status for either.
They do not drink so that did not factor in to choice. They opted for leg room in Exit Row. Row 17 for recline.
Difference in cost of exit seat to Premium was used to pre-purchase food for flight.
