I also remember that 1980's airlines from Comecon states (including LO) and of course MEA flew to BEY on regular basis. Fortunately nothing bad happened.
I remember as a teenager flying on LO IL62M's between WAW and KWI around 1985-1987. On one of the WAW-KWI segments somewhere over Middle East, I distinctly remember an announcement from the cockpit to the effect of "Please fasten your seatbelts, as we will be flying over a war zone".
Not sure whether it was for real or just a pilot having some fun with us. Also not sure about how much a fastened seat belt would have helped in this situation, but hey ho...
