Yes, that benefit is effectively dead now. The companion benefit is now limited to buying one business class ticket and buying one economy ticket (money or miles) and using PP. You can force the upgrade on one segment and then take your chances or the other direction, or you can buy economy in just one direction (and force upgrade) and business in the other.

Four times so far this year I've purchased a domestic business fare (usually P or Z) and been able to get a saver business award (IN) for my GS MM companion. Each time I've also been offered the opportunity to use a saver coach award and force business with PlusPoints (XN+PP=IN).

Since my failure to get a companion business saver award, I have read other posts of mixed experiences. As long as some are still able to succeed, I hope the exception has not been officially changed.
