Just returned from a 4-night stay at the Cape. Food was spectacular, view is the best in Cabo, service was good, but be aware, this is a hotel, not a resort. If you are looking for a resort-type experience, I would go elsewhere. After a long weekend by the pool, we were starting to feel like we had spent enough time at the Cape.

Room: Used a SUA for the Thompson Suite. When I had originally booked, all Thompson Suites were sold out. I created an alert on OpenHotelAlert.com and got a notification a few weeks before our trip that a Suite had opened up. Was able to call Hyatt and grab it!

As many have mentioned before, the Thompson Suite is large and beautiful. It’s well designed (aside from the awkwardly placed bathtub) and has pocket doors that can make the suite feel as if it’s one large room, or a separate bedroom and living room.

The balcony was the highlight of the suite. There are only 5 Thompson Suites in the hotel. Rooms 110 and 210 have larger balconies that extend further than the balconies in rooms 310, 410, and 510. Loved having coffee and watching the surfers on the huge balcony daybed.

My only complaint about the room is that it is starting feel a bit dated. The floor tiles were fading, the couch corners were worn, the paint on the room door was peeling, and the shower had seen better days. I know that the hotel tries to maintain a vintage-feel, but the rooms could definitely use a refresh.

Food: We never had a bad meal during our stay. Breakfast was excellent! I’d recommend trying the steak and eggs and the braised pork with mole. As a Globalist, our waiter explained what was included every morning (sweet bread, fruit plate, coffee, juice, and an entrée). Our waiter told us that everything would be taken off the bill unless we ordered something bottled (like Coke, kombucha, or alcohol). He was correct. At checkout, there were no breakfast charges aside from added tips.

Manta was awesome, albeit expensive. Tasting menu for two and a couple of cocktails resulted in a $400 bill (which included 16% tax and 15% service charge). My wife is pregnant and can’t eat raw foods, but they were extremely accommodating, giving her separate appetizers, in addition to what we would have received anyways. Ambiance was cool, but it was empty at 7:30pm on a Saturday night and became eerily quiet from time to time. Our waiter offered us two free drinks as Globalists, but forgot to offer them to us until we had asked for the bill. Nice perk, but poor timing.

The Rooftop was another trendy spot. I’d highly recommend making a reservation for 30 minutes before sunset, and try to get a spot near the ledge. This is one of the best views of Cabo and El Arco. Cocktails were tasty, DJ was playing great music, and the food was solid.

The Sunday Brunch was the one meal that I thought was a bit overhyped. The food was good, but I expected more for a $100 brunch. As a Globalist, it was only a $30 upcharge, which I felt was reasonable, but I've seen more impressive hotel brunches out there.

One night, we took an Uber to a restaurant called Tres Gallos. The restaurant is designed for tourists, but much more authentic than what you would find in the touristy area of Can San Lucas. Food was delicious, service was top notch, and the seating area was nicely decorated in the traditional Mexican style.

Service: This is where The Cape is a step below other 5-star hotels. Generally, the service was really good, but we experienced multiple service lapses throughout our stay that you would not expect at a high-end hotel. Nothing that ruined our stay, but enough to be noticeable.

Amenities: There are two pools at The Cape. The main one, which has a DJ and poolside bar, is louder and has a Vegas-pool party vibe. The smaller one is off to the side, and was infrequently used by guests. There are four smaller cabanas next to this pool, which is where my wife and I found was the best place to find some peace and quiet.

The spa was great, with one caveat: it was crowded! There were 8 to 10 other people using the facilities during our visit. I literally had to leave the steam room and come back later since it was full. They didn’t have enough lounge chairs for all of their spa guests, so couples were sitting on each other’s laps while waiting. We went on a Friday afternoon, so I’d recommend picking a weekday when it is less crowded.

Along with the rest of the hotel, the spa has a cool, matte black decor. The massages were outstanding. They have a sauna, steam room, cold plunge, and hot tub with amazing views. A week before our stay, we received an email offering us a 15% discount on any spa treatments as a Globalist benefit. I had already booked our treatments, but they were willing to provide the 15% discount anyways, which was a nice gesture.

Speaking of crowded, they need to expand their gym space as well. The gym is well-equipped. It’s got everything you need from a cardio or weight-training standpoint. But the space itself is very small. Every morning we went (between 7am and 9am), there were 5 to 10 people using the gym, which made it feel really crowded. Given the clientele, it would have been nice to have a larger fitness space.

We took the Bootcamp fitness class on Sunday for $30 per person. It was on the rooftop, but in the only area of the rooftop that doesn’t have a view. Personally, I would skip this. The class consisted of a trainer giving you a few body weight exercises to perform in a circuit. Nothing worth paying for.

We used Cabo Shuttle Services to get to and from the airport. Great and friendly service. I would highly recommend. Use promo code “BajaLife” for 8% off. Total came to $144 roundtrip. Once at The Cape, you can use Ubers to get around. Keep in mind, that Ubers in Mexico are much smaller than Ubers in the US. If you are traveling with more than 2 people or need to bring luggage, get the Uber XL.

Overall, we had a very relaxing time at The Cape. Globalist recognition is excellent considering the free breakfast, the Thompson Suite upgrade, and the spa discount. Dining is spectacular, but keep in mind that you will paying for the high quality. Service was good, not great. Would definitely consider returning for another long weekend in the future!
