Happened to my wife when heading to Milan for a skiing holiday - only a handful of bags loaded to an already delayed flight. No skiing equipment, winter clothing or boots, ended up spending over a grand in the resort to purchase new winter clothes, base layers etc. No issue getting it back from BA.
