Oh wow, didn't realize SHE is all the way up in northern China, about 400 miles northeast of Beijing.

That's definitely the long way. Not a lot of other options, at least one-stop:

1) SFO-PEK-SHE (UA on the longhaul and CA for the short flight - probably the best bet)

1) SFO-PEK-SHE on CA (I think Air China is resuming its flight between PEK and SFO next month but very little availability)

2) SFO-FRA-SHE on LH (kinda neat with a longhaul nonstop, but not sure Lufthansa has resumed/started this route. Also two longhauls.
