2. Even though I am an explorist I am not being offered an upgrade to the beach villa with pool - which I believe I should be entitled to- i called them and and was told that I would not be entitled as PH does not participate in the WOH upgrades. They instead quoted me $550 per night for the upgrade on top of points.
3. Lastly, If I book via points, how to best save food costs (neither of us are into drinks anyway)
I wouldn't plan on the buffet... the selection there was pretty paltry and served best as an accompaniment to entrees.
It isn't out of the ordinary for Globalists to get a one category upgrade if available, but indeed as it is an all-villa property, there isn't an upgrade entitlement for guests. If you want the upgrade, you gotta pay for it.
You could bring some snacks with you from home to supplement your meals, that might help defray some of the food costs. But TBH the Park Hyatt is relatively good value when it comes to food. Without Globalist, I'd suggest you skip breakfast most days and enjoy lunch by the pool. Dinner doesn't have to be an event, either, but you should at least try the Maldivian Catch of the day... fantastic place for fresh seafood served with traditional Maldivian spices.
A safe food budget for two people would be in the realm of $400-$500 a day.
I understand they have half-board and full-board options, but not really sure how those work.
