I think that is quite possibly the best strategy.
TK might still be worth looking at though due to the easy re-qualification criteria. I am sure that flying in J there will be times when a TK or Star Alliance carrier offers the cheapest - or nearly cheapest - fare. If you credit this to TK you could could maintain status and still be able to take advantage fly non-Star Alliance carriers when they offer the cheapest fares without having to worry too much about maintaining TK status.
