I just had the pleasure of a holiday in Fiji that gave me a chance to try out three of the Marriott branded hotels. All my stays were on points (a bargain when booked at 4xk/night, and still good value at 60k/night that I see now) and I'm an Ambassador. This was also during the Australian school holidays, so peak time for the island.

First, the Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort in Denarau. Spent two nights here after a late flight arrival and midday boat departure. Overall felt it was a buzzy family oriented hotel that was massive in scale. Breakfast was substantial and incudes 3 egg chefs, pizza and fresh juices. The kids club was pretty good, but did cost $6FJD an hour. The pool was busy and we had a good lunch and dinner at the non buffet restaurant with live music. Ambassador recognition was a good room upgrade to an ocean view studio, but no welcome gift. Whilst the hotel is right next to the Westin it was closed for refurbishment which is why we didn't visit.

Then it was the south sea cruises boat to the Sheraton Resort & Spa, Tokoriki Island, Fiji, via a bus transfer. That took about 2 hours, mainly as we dropped people off at other resorts on the way, the direct trip back is about 45 minutes. Note you transfer from the large catamaran to a small boat near the resort. This resort was the most special of the 3 and felt more like a boutique with only 100 rooms and a relatively small pool area around which you tended to congregate. The resort splits family and adult room styles into two halves of the resort. Ambassador recognition was excellent with an upgrade to an ocean facing room (only approx 25% are like this) and a welcome gift of chocolate and verve champagne. There was also a cocktail hour on Tuesday, plus the GM did a personal getting. In general the staff were always checking the stay was going well and that we were happy with everything. Fun fact, wine was pretty good value here compared to the food. A dinner buffet for two with a show was about the same as three bottles of mid range wine...

Finally we stayed at the Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay. This was the largest resort and most spread out resort with a good variety of room types from over water villas, standard rooms to large bures that looked out to the lagoon or ocean. We'd been pre upgraded to a royal bure weeks in advance (I did give the hotel SNAs to lock it in) that was the best room on the trip, large, big bathroom and quite isolated. This meant that we needed to get a buggy everywhere. The other ambassador status perks included a welcome set of chocolates and non alcoholic drinks. Food was fairly standard with a variety of restaurants and buffet / non buffet options, including pizza with a real pizza oven in the lagoon restaurant.

What was consistent across all the hotels was
  • Lovely people and constant "bula" greetings from all staff members
  • "Fiji time" service, which could often mean long waits for adult food or drinks - but the kids meals came very quickly
  • Clear attempts to learn the names of children, my kid was recognised by name most of the time, especially at the Tokoriki Sheraton
  • Events, the vast majority free, every hour or so, like cooking classes, coconuts, singing, dancing, torch lighting. And then every few days a fiji themed night with dancing
  • Fairly mediocre food by international standards, but perfectly edible. Think Australia gold coast tourist fare such as fish n chips, burgers, and some local dishes of veg/soup (which matches the majority of the clientele from Australia or New Zealand)
  • Good wine lists and choices (mainly Australian and New Zealand) that would be pricey by their standards but was reasonable by international resort levels (approx 80FJD for a bottle, 18FJD by the glass)
  • A good ambassador status recognition overall
  • Real challenges in arranging logistics, I'd suggest you just book the transfers yourself. Everything worked in the end but it took a bit of hassle and multiple emails in advance/near the time.
  • Fairly slow check-in, mainly as the long times compound waiting, even if you're #1 in the queue it may be 15 minutes wait. The Sheraton Tokoriki helped by bypassing check-in for me once they worked out who I was and therefore my status.

Would happily return to any of the hotels, I'd suggest the Sheraton Tokoriki was the most like a Maldives resort, but the Marriott Momo bay had better food and rooms. Our best meal was a fresh fish at the Fish bar at the Marriott, with live music and attentive staff
