I have done this throughout the USA by just calling (or even using the in app chat) to say please add my dad (or whoever) as someone who can check in because he'll get there before I do, and it's never been an issue. They'll make him present his own credit card (you can avoid that by filling out a form which is I think really to authorize your employees to charge things to your card, but it usually takes a few days to process and generally speaking I haven't known who would get there first until day of)
