It's a popular misconception that aircraft are airtight (or watertight, if you've seen Airport '77): in fact they leak like sieves, especially around the doors. It's the responsibility of the pressurisation system to pump enough air in through the engines to replace the air that's coming out.

Small confined space + two large doors = hissing noise, more than you'd get in a similar area on the lower deck.
