I am childless by choice and although I do like children, I just never wanted them. I have been on flights, particularly one long haul where a baby literally screamed for the entire night flight. It was disruptive, that cannot be denied, but both Mum and a cabin crew were trying their absolute best to do something. Dad however didn’t play any part whatsoever in this and just sat there. I had a lot of sympathy for Mum even though I was gritting my teeth at times. I had wax earplugs in which muted it greatly but you could still hear the baby. In recent years we’ve been fortunate enough to be able always to fly J but in the preceding years it was Y and the worst I ever heard was a man in the middle row some rows up snoring like you’ve never heard before. What it was like for those very near him on this long overnight LHR/JNB flight I can’t imagine. Mostly though I’ve observed parents doing their utmost to keep the children quiet and amused including whilst trying to eat their food which always looks quite tricky. When I went to CFU a couple of weeks ago a young family sat in row 4 (we were in 2 on the other side) and as a couple who sat in front of them came in the woman said “oh God, kill me now.” Nothing happened so flying and children don’t necessarily mean a challenging flight - it’s just luck of the draw.
