It's worth pointing out that most programs are spend based only when flying their own metal. Partner accrual is still largely distance-based. The big exception is that BA flights accrued to AA are soon changing to be spend-based. I'm hoping that AY does not follow suit when they switch to Avios.

Having said that, while I prefer AA's program overall, AS certainly has better earning charts for partner earn, especially in business or first class.

As for domestic flights, almost everything AA marketed earns more on AA, even "cheap" tickets. Economy is not that cheap any more, and the distance multiplier for the cheaper fare buckets is really bad when crediting to AS.

Same goes the other way -- any "good" AS mileage run that I've ever seen is not very good when credited to AA due to the low multiplier.

Back in 2018 and 2019 I was regularly flying transcon for $100-$120 each way and hoping for upgrades. The distance-based accrual was a big deal then. Now I find that there is not a huge difference between being distance-based or spend-based, and when there is a big difference, it's usually in favor of the spend based earnings.
