In the context of retention offers they are also interested in the likelihood that you will cancel. If you have held the same card for a long time that seems to indicate a reduced probability of cancellation.
I've asked for and received retention offers on cards after I've had them for several years and had no intention of closing but figured I may as well get on the gravy train. It was always my first time asking so maybe that's why they gave it to me. I have no idea if they truly thought I'd close those cards but I did put lots of every day spend on them and like I said on my part I had zero intention of closing them.

Correct, you cannot close or downgrade a card for 12 months after accepting the retention offer.
