It's not the same situation, but it worked for me. I paid ~$60 for a couple of tickets after the $188 in AA gift card money that I had.

BTW, the DoC example of it not counting was on a large purchase, I believe. I also paid $100+ in taxes on each of two award tickets on BA (but purchased AA codeshare) earlier this year, and it did not count.

FYI, it did post differently from the gift certificate. The gift certificate posted with "Fort Worth TX" under Merchant Information. The ticket purchase posted with their phone number in that field. The posted charges were ~$30 each (and posted separately, as they always do).
