HH pays the franchisee hotel owner relative peanuts for the award nights. Big profit for HH to sell you points and then have you burn them straight away. In fact, more profitable than you booking a cash rate and Hilton taking its commission out of the top line.

Hotel owners don't like it so much, but it's part of the package of getting customers to stay simply because it is a Hilton-branded hotel.
And also, if you buy the points and use them, you would get significantly less points for a points stay than for a paid stay. Especially if there's some sort of double or triple bonus going on.
