It is not surprising at all. SAN was a focus city before the VX purchase and flights from JFK to California today were sold out for all carriers in premium cabins today. DL's 10PM flight to SFO was the only one that had any space left today.

The surprise is how much they have cut back on the rest of California and it is increasingly questionable whether any of the lost flights will come back. Some capacity will be added due to upgauging but that's about it in the near term.
