And in emergency situation (e.g. AP call center is closed), you can call AC to cancel. AC will cancel the space but not refund the ticket (you will need to contact AP later to refund the ticket), and I can imagine AC doesn’t have many ways (if any) to authenticate you using account details.
When I call res, I put in the same Aeroplan number and PIN as when I call Aeroplan.
And even if they're limited in what they can do to Aeroplan bookings, they can certainly see the account number that made the booking.
Do they actually check that? I don't know. But they could.
