Over the phone they often just verify the passenger name on the booking.
And in emergency situation (e.g. AP call center is closed), you can call AC to cancel. AC will cancel the space but not refund the ticket (you will need to contact AP later to refund the ticket), and I can imagine AC doesn’t have many ways (if any) to authenticate you using account details.
