Bag check cutoff time clarification: domestic connecting to international flight

Arrrggghh! I'm hoping someone can help me. I've searched and searched and have been unable to find an answer to my question.
I am NOT referring to "recommended" arrival times, I am referring to REQUIRED arrival/check-in times. Specifically, for bag check.
If I am flying from a domestic point to another domestic point and then changing planes with the same airline, different flight number,
do Domestic or Int'l rules apply to my baggage check-in at the point of origin? In other words, if the airline requires you to check
your bags at least 60 minutes in advance for international flights or 45 for domestic - which is it for the first leg? Seems it would be
domestic since that leg originates and ends in the US.
And, please, I'm looking for an answer to my question - not advice such as "Just play it safe and arrive..."
If you can provide a link to an actual rule regarding this that would be even better!!
Thanks in advance!
