The relevant rule only limits the number of
flight segments.
You can have any number of surface segments (subject to the overall limit of 16 segments total)
Apart from the point of origin, there is no restriction on multiple stopover/transits at a point.
Also what if i go IST-LHR-CPH-HEL-BCN-GIG. Would the BCN-GIG section which i think would have 2 flights (BCN-LHR-GIG) count the BCN-LHR segment as an additional European segment ?
BCN-LHR-GIG will require an intra Europe/Middle East flight segment. Since you already have 4 such segments in your itinerary, a 5th will not be allowed.
Workarounds I can think of are:
- surface segment to MAD and fly Iberia to GIG from there
- fly from BCN to GIG via the US (via JFK or MIA); you can stopover in the US, and you can return to the US after GIG
