The "Value" of Choosing Premium Economy Awards Over Y for Family Trip
Today I booked the family of 4 on a 10 hour flight from HND to SFO on JAL in PE using 200k.
Alternatively I could have booked into coach with 140k. With that, I have fallen into a mental crisis. On one hand, I can justify the Prem Econ as the miles came with relatively low cost (credit card welcome bonus, etc.) so why not reward the family with a bit of comfort? It's less than 50% more expensive than economy, which probably provides a better 'value' if you compare the cash prices. On the other hand, we are all young, healthy, skinny and not tall. So 10 hours in coach won't bother us that much. Savings is savings.
So, nothing serious. I should be okay and actually happy either way. But I've tied myself up so much in a knot that I feel I'm driving myself a bit crazy here. It would have been an easier decision between 240k for J vs. 140k in Y. The value proposition of either option would have been more distinctive. Between the 200k PE and the 140k coach though, I don't have an absolute guiding principle to rely on to determine which option to take. It's like no matter what I do, it should be okay; at the same time, no matter what I do, it's kind of awful in a way.
Not intending to be overly dramatic. Not something I would bother my wife with. So I thought I'd come up here and maybe seek some wisdom from fellow travelers...
