Paying for Economy space at the airport

I paid for an aisle seat in regular economy on the AUH-JFK sector which is a 14 hour flight. As I get closer to my trip, i have second thoughts about changing my seat to one in Economy Space or even an exit row. However, the website doesnt allow me to do so anymore.

1. Is it possible to pay for an economy space seat during check in at the airport? Do they give you a credit for the seat selection you have already made?
2. I found Etihad charges close to USD 100 to choose an Economy space seat on this sector!! Does the cost go down during check-in?

Thank you
