Is there a separate check in area (SFO/EWR) for passengers who have requested wheel chair access? UA would then ping the wheel chair assistants to show up and escort the passenger through security and to the gate/aircraft?
You can check in as normal or advise a skycap curbside that you have requested wheelchair assistance. That is what I have done in the past.
