Maybe they can still cancel the ticket as a commercial gesture but not catch the transaction if cancellation occurs after midnight… or maybe it was just yet another poorly-trained agent.
I think the difference is that if you do it until 23:59 they can cancel the charge and it never goes through, but if you cancel the next day, you can still do it for a full refund within 24h, but the original payment is processed and you have to wait for the actual refund, which might impact your CC statement.
