Port Out, Starboard Home only works if you start off flying in an Easterly direction; the term was originally coined for travel to the Sub-Continent and Asian parts of the (former) British Empire.
Principle still stands, however, one just need to adjust it according to the direction of travel for the outbound leg. So for a trip across the pond from Europe, the correct sequence would be SOPH. For travels in a North/South direction, SOPH would also be the preferred option if your outbound is a morning flight and the return is late afternoon/before sunset.
Short of the long: Always go for a seat in the shady side.
