Minor note: USAir/USAirways bought AA. Which was bought (reverse merger) by America West. There was about a year between the announcement and exit from *A and the next day into OW.
I will say that as a previous USAir customer they did wipe out the mileage accrual count for (lifetime status) the decades before the merger but the miles were still there.
