Does anyone here with an Amex bank with (and pay off the Amex with) Smile or The Co-operative Bank? Thought I'd ask here rather than the Amex forum as it's kind of a UK centric question.

I've been doing so for years, but on trying to pay this last month started getting some non-specific error after going through the usual security questions. Amex first blamed the bank - but the bank say the payment is going through at their end but being rejected. Now Amex are saying they just won't accept a payment from that bank anymore. I know they don't accept Smile/Co-op for bank transfers (which is bizarre enough) but they've never had an issue with just paying via debit card. They removed the debit card from the account in an attempt to reset things but I can't even add it back, let alone make a payment.

I'm not sure what I'm expected to do about this - their only suggestion is for me to change my bank to one they like, which is pretty much a non starter. It's not like I could even cancel the card if I wanted to, given that they cannot offer me any way to pay off the balance. I've been back and forward for weeks now and they've been useless. I've got interest/fines mounting and transactions being declined (I'm trying not to use it, but there are still odd payment popping up).

I can't be the only person with this bank and an Amex, so either this is happening to others, or their support people are talking nonsense and this is a technical problem which I need either Amex or Smile to fix... I'm just hoping someone else here has this combination of banks and can tell me if they're also having problems or not.
