Looks like an issue with the spoilers. Could be deferred, but that would impose an 18,000 pound weight penalty which wasn't workable on the very long flight. Pilot duty day limit, though they did agree to extend, didn't allow enough time to operate with a new airplane. Very little margin for delays on these ultra long-haul flights.
