There are differences.
When using the 24h grace period (which I've been told is now "until 23:59 the same day", beware!), the transaction is simply not processed.
If you paid by credit card, it might not even appear on your account. So it is faster (you don't wait for the money to go back and forth), your CC balance is not impacted, and you don't have to pay the ticket issuing fees which are not refunded when cancelling a Flex ticket.
