Ask the Avianca agent to supply you with the UA PNR, explaining that UA cannot seem to find the reservation in their system, and that the reservation needs to be pulled up with UA to select seats, etc.
Did you supply UA with the Avianca ticket number, and ask UA if they can find the reservation from the ticket number?
