The flight number won't affect the gate used. The only reason I'm aware of for changing flight numbers like that is to reset the statistics that are tracked by the govt in regards to on time performance.
I'm just trying to determine which gate is *typically* used by flights from DFW > GDL on AA.
More than just the flight number changed - they also switched from Airbus to Boeing metal.
