I agree with the rest of your post but this is not true. BA was given the two remaining Concordes (later BOAG and BOAF) that were to go to other airlines but that pulled out. It wasn't so much BA paying 1 pound as the UK government not having anything else to do with them but transfer them to the national airline.

It's also worth remebering that BA invested an enormous amount in the Concorde programme, without which it would never have flown for as long as it did. Even the £5m Branson offered at the end is nowhere near that.
