Learned these things about a month ago. There weren’t any open odd seats in the middle row together so I put us in 5G and 5L, planning to ask the person in 5D if they mind swapping so we can sit together. I’m totally fine if they say no— we’re right across the aisle from each other and we both plan to sleep most of the flight (reason why we bought Polaris seats in the first place)— but it seems like a good swap to me, assuming this person is flying solo, of course. But reading this thread makes me wonder if there’s a reason why someone might turn that swap down. Maybe they prefer to not be next to the window? Also, any use in asking the gate agent before boarding to help us make the swap so we don’t have to do the awkward seat shuffle on the plane (assuming they say yes)? Is that a thing? Or just wait until we’re on the plane?
You could ask the gate agent, but he or she will only look for adjacent seats. Don’t be surprised if you’re offered 8D and 8G. I’d wait until you’re on the plane. I imagine there’s a good chance that you’ll be successful.

It’s a different story in Polaris, but when you hear the question in coach about switching seats translate it in your head as “would you mind switching credit cards with me,” which adds to my reluctance to entertain the request.
