Starting a thread on this because there doesn't seem to be one yet (mods, if I am wrong, please move this one!)
Mr. travelmad478 and I have planned a Texas road trip around this event--we'll be heading from our home in MSY to Big Bend National Park, with a stop in Fredericksburg along the way for the night preceding the eclipse. It is a great opportunity to catch a long-duration totality, and
the very long path of the route through all three countries in North America makes it accessible for a lot of people. In fact, every member of my immediate family will be seeing it from somewhere!
We had a hell of a time trying to find a place to stay in Fredericksburg (pretty much every place is booked out by tour groups or requiring vast sums of money and multiple-night reservations) but finally scored something. I'm wondering if rooms will free up closer to the time if they realize that no one's going to pay thousands of dollars (our plan B was to fold down the seats and sleep in the back of our Mazda CX-50). I also have one acquaintance who lives in Fredericksburg; I'm going to ask him if he or any friends would like to make some extra cash by renting out a spare bedroom.
