They can tolerate the travel hacker crowd because manufacturing miles is pure profit but we aren't requiring in airport / on-board elite benefits nearly as much as actual frequent flyers...
Someone generating AA EXP from manufacturing miles (not sure how you're using the term, but I assume from credit card and portal spend) and then barely flying AA metal (paid or award) but instead redeeming those miles for partner business/first and using partner first class lounges on those trips--which is what I consider a savvy "travel hacker"--is not generating "pure profit" for AA. They are very likely less profitable than someone that flies AA metal a lot and takes advantage of "in airport and on-board elite benefits." Sure, someone that manufactures a ton of miles to become AA EXP and then doesn't fly much on AA or use their miles wisely (or at all) would be profitable, but who is amassing tons of AA miles just to say they have status and never use it?
