I tend to book a lot of short haul quite late, sometimes only one or two days out, and when flying in CE I will often end up in row 4 or 5, but that's fine as long as I get a window seat. I recently had a flight where the only CE seat available for a late booking was an aisle seat, which was annoying, but that's rare in my experience.
