This is not a negotiation. You feed in the segments you want and the computer prices it out. If there is more than 24 hours between your flights they will either add a stopover (if allowed) and charge you whatever the fare charges for a stopover, or it will break it into 2 fares.
And that 24 hour limit is on domestic as well as international fares? I just had an agent tell me this, but I couldn't find written policy on it...

Interestingly, an agent offered me the option to change my second segment on a domestic award flight (Alaska metal) to > 24 hours. And the agent citing the 24 hour rule all acknowledged they have discretion on this--especially in any kind of IRROPs, provided saver availability is showing on the partner carrier.
