Phantom inventory is very frustrating and it's usually not possible to tell exactly what the cause is, though it's typically some kind of miscommunication between different IT systems.

Is the space available on Aeroplan? If it's available there, it will be cheaper than UA.

IMO the phrase "blocking inventory" is much overused on FT and rarely (if ever) describes what's actually happening.
